Zack from SALT CIRCLES: INTERVIEW

1) How did you get your start playing drums?

I started playing drums when I was still playing guitar and singing in a metal band in high school. Every time the drummer got up I would sit down to hit stuff. I got a little better at hitting stuff, and eventually Sylvia approached me about playing drums for a project. 3 manifestations of our project later, here we are, with a more serious and heavy approach to songwriting.

2) You have a song called "MARR" and your bio mentions it being inspired by "non-men". What is MARR and how does it influence your music?

(Deferring to Sylvia on this one):

"MARR stands for "misandry as radical resistance" and is about micro-aggressions in the ~scene~ against marginalized people. I spoke with a number of femme identifying people about their experiences, and the song itself goes through experiences of myself and my partner, with the chorus "men are cops" coming from a good friend in Philadelphia. Obviously, things aren't so simple, and even speaking about non-men in this way is exclusionary and can be harmful, but that is what the song is specifically speaking to. That said, it is incredibly cathartic to yell about the times we've been hurt in front of people that feel the same way and people that have done the hurting."
3) You're playing EMP Collective in Baltimore on April 7th. After that, what's next for Salt Circles?

Salt Circles just finished recording some new tracks. We have a real heavy 3 song EP coming soon, as well as a short split release with our friends (and fellow 2-piece noise-makers) Sour Spirit from Philly! We are playing at Holy Underground May 2, Nuspace on May 5, and our split release with Sour Spirit is at Sidebar May 9!
